Understanding the I-20 Form for U.S. Student Visas

The I-20 Form is a critical document for international students seeking to study in the United States under an F-1 or M-1 student visa. It serves as a Certificate of Eligibility, issued by SEVP-certified colleges or universities, confirming your legitimate status as a student and facilitating the visa application process. With this form, students can apply for a driver’s license, a Social Security number, and are eligible for on-campus or certain off-campus employment opportunities.

Acquiring Your I-20 Form

Upon acceptance into an SEVP-certified institution, you’ll receive your I-20 Form from the school’s Designated School Official (DSO). The DSO also manages updates to your form via the SEVIS system. There are two variants of the I-20 Form:

  • Form I-20 (F-1): For academic and language students.
  • Form I-20 (M-1): For vocational students.

Both forms record essential details such as your SEVIS ID, program dates, study program, financial sources, and personal information.

I-20 Form Requirements

To be eligible for the I-20 Form, you must:

  • Gain acceptance from an SEVP-certified institution.
  • Ensure all personal and financial information is accurate and current.

The I-901 SEVIS Fee

After acceptance, you’re required to pay the I-901 SEVIS fee, necessary for obtaining your student visa. This fee applies to:

  • Students from countries requiring a visa for U.S. entry.
  • Students from visa-waiver countries.
  • Non-immigrants in the U.S. changing to F-1 or M-1 status.
  • Students who have been out of status or outside the U.S. for more than five months.

Payment requires your personal details, school code, and SEVIS ID number. Retain the payment receipt for your visa interview.

Who Needs an I-20 Form?

The I-20 Form is indispensable for:

  • New international students.
  • Students transferring within the U.S.
  • Non-immigrants changing to F-1 status.
  • Students returning from an extended absence.

Always carry your signed I-20 Form when entering the U.S., as it will be requested by Customs and Border Protection officers.

Replacing Your I-20 Form

You may request a new I-20 Form if it’s lost, for travel, or if there are changes in your SEVIS status or personal information. Contact your DSO for a reprint, which is possible only if your SEVIS status is ‘initial’ or ‘active’.

Travel Considerations

While not needed for travel itself, the I-20 Form is essential for re-entry into the U.S. Ensure you have a hard copy with original signatures when returning to resume your studies.
